Sunday Special – Grand Beach, Manitoba

The easternmost of the Canada’s Prairie provinces is Manitoba. It’s capital city is Winnipeg (also home of the Winnipeg Jets NHL hockey team). If you were to head north from Winnipeg for about 100 km/ 62 miles you would come upon Grand Beach on the banks of the Lake Winnipeg. I have heard of this beach years and years ago as I often visited the capital city though have not yet experienced this particular spot in Canada.

This beach is found near the lakeside town of Grand Marais, within the Grand Beach Provincial Park. For decades the area has been a popular destination to get away. The powdery silica sand beach stretches for 3km / 1.9 miles along a backdrop of grass-covered sand dunes that reach upwards of 12 m / 39 ft. Some will argue that this is the best beach in North America. Along with enjoying the rays of the sun while lounging about beach-side the area comes with the usual sun and water related activities – water sports, boating, beach volleyball, and the annual sandcastle competition. Nearby in Grand Marais there are restaurants and bars, quaint shops, and various businesses along the boardwalk. On Fridays and Saturdays you can peruse the wares and treasures at the small local market. Additional activities and amenities in the region include campsites, cabin rentals, boat launch spots, self-guided hiking trails, geo-caching hunts, and more. It seems that Grand Beach and vicinity has plenty to offer. And it is not just a summer destination. In the cold of the winter months you can bundle up and participate in snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, ice skating and the like. A year-round destination!

At time of posting Manitoba has some COVID-19 restrictions in place. Additionally, some businesses and amenities may not be open. You may considering contacting them to see if they are operational. Please follow pandemic protocols to keep everyone safe and healthy.
