Considered the largest religious temple in the world by Guinness World Records, the stunning Angkor Wat is synonymous with Cambodia. A phenomenal monument, it was built in the early 12th century by Suryavarman II as a temple for the Hindu god Vishnu though it was eventually converted to a Buddhist temple by the end of the century. The temple and its grounds cover an astonishing 162 hectares / 400 acres. The complex includes a fortified wall and moat for protection, five prominent towers, and numerous buidlings and structures, many with carvings and intricate designs. Today it is a popular tourist destination yet it retains significant archaeological importance and extensive cultural, social, artistic, and religious history of the Khmer Empire.

To visit this stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city of Siem Reap, Cambodia is the logical starting point as it is close by, about 6 km / 3.7 miles away. From what I understand it is a good idea to buy a multi-day pass so that you can take time to explore the grounds without being rushed. Cambodia and Angkor Wat are definately on my “to see” list.
