I’ll be honest, when I think of Sweden, my mind usually goes straight to IKEA and ABBA. And that it is the neighbour of Finland, which is my ethnic heritage. As a Vancouverite I am always grateful for Swedish twin brother Daniel and Hendrik Sedin who played for the Vancouver Canucks NHL team! Of course there is more than that in the largest Nordic country by area and population. Sandwiched between Finland and Norway on the Scandinavian Peninsula, with Denmark to the south, Sweden shares the natural beauty of the region. As a result, its geography is littered with fresh-water lakes, meandering rivers, grand mountains chains, and plush forests. It has a generous coastline, an abundance of islands, and part of it is inside the Arctic Circle. In fact, roughly 15% of Sweden’s land is protected in some way, mainly as national parks or nature reserves.
As a whole, Sweden aims to offer a full and well-rounded travel experience: extensive nature is never far; history can be seen in architecture and museums; musical styles are abundant: and food and drink are fresh and local. Situated on the waterfront, the capital city of Stockholm dates back to the 1200s. It shows off its architecture through buildings such as the Royal Palace (Kungliga Slottet), the Parliament Building (Riksdagshuset), and the striking buildings along the boulevard Strandvägen. Of course, there are a number of equally interesting cities, towns, and regions throughout the country, each with its own vibe. From Gothenburg to Uppsala, Lappland to Malmö (and the only Swedish city I’ve visited) and everywhere in between, Sweden will no doubt keep you happily wandering.
