I’ve only became familiar with this architecturally intriguing basilica recently. Truthfully, it is the January photo on my new calendar of destinations. With the name clearly listed, I easily sought out this architectural beauty. The imposing building and adjoining bridge emanates an air of grandeur amidst the nest of nature, piquing my curiosity. The allure of the space is due in part to it being built within a canyon and spanning the Guáitara River in southwest Colombia. It rises an impressive 100 m / 328 feet above the river with the stone bridge at 50 m / 165 feet. Constructed in the early 20th century, the Roman Catholic church is favoured as the most breathtaking in Colombia due to its stunning backdrop and remarkable architecture. The precarious location was said to be the site of an alleged appearance of the Virgin Mary to two believers. Initially a shrine was established and maintained for a time, followed by the construction of a chapel, and eventually the basilica which broke ground in 1916 and completed in 1949.
Situated close to the Ecuadorian border, the church can be admired and visited by either side of the border, frequently by bus or car. The nearest town is Ipiales City which is found roughly 11 km / 7 miles away. From what I understand you can take a taxi or bus to and from the site from there.
This magnificent wonder of architecture certainly does seem like a peaceful and lovely place to visit. I may add it to my ever-growing list of wonders to behold in this stunning world of ours.
