The beautiful cherry blossoms, or sakura as they are called in Japanese, produce lovely flowers and are wonderful to see in full bloom. These ornamental trees are common in the Northern Hemisphere, and in Japan, they have been cultivated for some time. Cherry blossoms are almost synonymous with Japan. In fact, Japan has gifted the trees to many nations in the 20th century as a expression of friendship, including Canada and right here in the Vancouver area. It is truly stunning to see the trees in their full splendor.

Springtime brings the full blossoming of the trees in a beautiful spectacle. Japan’s yearly spring hanami (flower viewing) brings locals and visitors alike to celebrate and view the beautiful floral displays. Festivals blossom around the country (pun intended), spanning the spring season. Weather is a major factor contributing to when blooms make their appearance, though generally, March through May are the most prolific months. It is a good idea to monitor the anticipated peak bloom times online for each year, especially if you want to make the most of this period and to determine where in Japan you’d like to see them. Japan has numerous regions to see the blooms, providing a wonderful opportunity to explore various areas in the country. You can select various prefectures and cities around the country displaying their abundance of pink. I believe deciding where to see them is the tough part though. Tokyo has a number of locales around the city whereas many consider Osaka the prime viewing destination. Kyoto offers viewers to enjoy the sakura by meandering along its Philosopher’s Path while Goryokaku Fort in Hakodate is lined with over a thousand trees. The blossoms surrounding Himeji Castle in the Hyogo prefecture provide a photo op like no other. Regardless where you view them, it would be a beautiful site.
