The Mediterrean Sea has a number of islands within its beautiful blue waters. Among them are Spain’s Balearic Islands, an archipelago of numerous islands, four of them being the main islands: Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca, and Fromentera. I myself have visited Mallorca many years ago. Since that time I have considered visiting some of the other islands. Until I get there, we will look at Ibiza, arguably the most well-known of the Balearics.
The Balearics are both a province and autonomous community of Spain. They have a history that goes back to the Phoenicians, possibly even further. Today the main islands are modern and popular with tourists for their accessiblity from mainland Europe and pleasant Mediterrean climate. Geographically, Ibiza is 150 km /98 mi from Valencia, Spain with Fromentera to its south and Mallorca and Menora to the east. Generally associated as a “party island”, it has its fill of wild nightclubs, thriving music scene, and many popular DJ nights. This rich nightlife scene is nothing new – it goes back to the 1950s and has evolved over the decades. Add the abundance of beaches; hot weather; and being in close proximity of mainland Europe and it is not a wonder that Ibiza is a popular getaway.
What many may not realize is that the island offers much more than just an active club scene. A rich culutural heritage is maintained. White-washed houses are held in family circles for generations; folkloric songs are passed from grandparents to grandchildren; and families and communities still partke in ball pagès – a traditional Ibizan dance that can found regularly about the island. Additionally, Ibiza’s Old Town (Dalt Vila) has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Wandering about one can explore its Castell d’Eivissa fortress, Ibiza Cathedral, and numerous monuments and alleyways. Throw in local wine and gastronomy plus Mediterrean sunsets along with a beautiful landscape and it seems Ibiza may surprise many.
