Sunday Special – Whitsunday Islands, Australia

Australia certainly is on my list of places to visit but I have yet to make there. I can say that Australia has been advertised often here in Canada since its recent re-opening and has been prominently displayed in many ways. And with summer soon winding down in Canada it makes sense for people to plan a sunny visit to Australia for when our cooler weather sets in. With that in mind, what better place to look at today than central Queensland’s Whitsunday Islands. Let’s go!

Whitsunday Islands

Made up of 74 islands along the northeasterly coast of Australia, the Whitsundays are an ever popular vacation hub for beach lovers. It is also an entryway for the Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef on the globe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These islands offer an array of immaculate beaches, warms turquoise blue waters, and diving and snorkelling adventures. It is not a surprise that this area, originally used for logging by local Aboriginals and later by white settlers, is now a popular tourist destination.

Being islands, you do need to plan how to arrive. This depends on which one(s) you visit. You can fly, take advantage of the numerous ferries, or use your own boat (if you have one). A popular central hub to make your way to the islands is the coastal community of Airlie Beach. A destination in its own right, you can combine stays here with the islands or simply use it as a quick stopover. Although there are many islands some are more popular than others, each offering differing types of vibes and accommodations. Hamilton Island is the most developed with an array of accommodation styles and activities to take part it. It is also one of the islands that you can fly into. Whitsunday Island is not only the largest, it is home to well known Whitehaven Beach, a 4.5 km / 2.8 mi long silica beach that offers warm clear waters that will have you swimming all day. Perhaps you want a more laid back and less developed feel. Then Long Island may be the choice for you with only a few accommodations to choose from. Camping on that island and many others is common and a great way to unwind. Do know that you do need to get a permit to camp. You can find more info here. Or you may add any of the other islands to your Whitsunday vacation time. I have to say, it seems there is much to see and explore in this part of the world. Any way you decide to visit these famous islands you will likely come away with fun and cherished memories.
